Responding to emergencies as a plumber can be a rewarding job. Knowing that you’ve made a difference to someone’s day and sorted out a major problem can give great job satisfaction. However, do you ever wonder what weird and wonderful things plumbers might come across when they eventually find the culprit that’s causing a blocked pipe or overflowing toilet? Here are some of the strange finds that plumbers have made:
- A squirrel
This is probably the last thing you’d expect to find as the cause of a plumbing blockage! It’s doubtful anyone would have flushed it down the toilet, that’s for sure! Unfortunately, the plumber who discovered this poor animal believed it had climbed down a vent pipe and become stuck. Needless to say, it was a pretty grim task trying to remove it!
- A Highly Valuable Bracelet
A distraught lady had realised too late that heavy expensive jewellery doesn’t float! When the clasp has become loose on a bracelet that was worth in excess of $10,000, it had fallen into the toilet and disappeared after an auto-flushing feature had activated. Thanks to the heroic actions of the plumber, the toilet was pulled from the wall and floor, retrieved from the pipe, giving a good wash and returned to the grateful lady owner.
- Family photo
Ever wondered where that favourite family holiday snap disappeared to? Well, can you be sure it didn’t end up down the loo? One plumber retrieved a bag of seashells from a blocked toilet pipe. Inside the bag was a holiday photo of smiling family members on the beach. It had obviously been a much-loved memory trinket that had somehow fallen out of a bag or pocket and flushed away! - False Teeth
Imagine the horror of finding these grinning back at you from the toilet pipe? After receiving a call about a blocked toilet, one emergency plumber armed with a pipe wrench made this grisly discovery! A whole set of dentures was the culprit this time and not a clogged-up ball of toilet paper. The question is, would the owner want them back after such an event?
- Foam Animals
Anyone with little children will understand the dangers of inappropriate items being flushed down the toilet. You might also be familiar with the foam toys that expand when you get them wet. These are notorious for blocking pipes! One plumber had to deal with a veritable zoo of large foam animals that had grown in size and completely blocked the toilet pipe. Much to the home owner’s annoyance, the child involved was delighted that they’d been found, and their experiment had worked! The bill payer was less delighted!
- A Wig
You wouldn’t imagine such a thing could even fit down a toilet, but this is exactly what one plumber discovered after getting a call about a blockage in the men’s toilet of a nightclub. It was a bright red long ladies wig, that had been used for a performing drag act at the club. It was given a rinse and hung to dry. Rumour has it that the wig appeared during the next performance, firmly placed on a man’s head – presumably with no knowledge of where it had been!
