Although most types of photography express what they deal about through their names, it is not the same with ‘Street Photography’. We can easily decipher that wedding photography is about the photographs of a wedding, landscape photography is about the landscapes and urban landscape photography is about the landscapes in the urban cities. But, street photography does not mean that you have to take photographs on he street.
Contrary to the apparent understanding, that street photography should be related to taking of pictures of strangers on the streets, it does actually, even have to have a human as its subject. The focus of photography in the street type is not on the subject, rather on the style of the photography.
The human artifacts and human beings are a very common feature of this sort of photography. One uniqueness about street photography, is to be able to capture the ‘decisive moment’. This refers to the understanding of the photographer to be able to take the photograph at a precise moment, for example, a man jumping a puddle of water at a railway station, where the image of the man is blurred. This is the precision that is required of a street photographer.
Other forms of photography like Urban photography done by David Berkowitz Chicago’s well known photographer, who is also an ardent lover of adventure, has much more demand than this. He practices his photography skills where ever he goes, whether on an adventure or while traveling, as that is his other passion.
Any street photographer needs to harbor a lot of creative ideas, because after all his aim is to portray a picture that creates the sense of awe in the viewer. Street photography is all about taking the photograph at the right moment. Like, if we take the previous example, had the shot be taken a little later or earlier then there would be no momentum captured in the photograph. The man would either be standing still contemplating how to cross the puddle, or would have been on the other side of the puddle having already crossed it. There would be a complete lack of excitement in such a photograph.
However, street photography should not be confused with documentary photography. Any street photographer does not always remain in one place, mentally. Though they might be physically present in their own home town yet while they walk on the streets everything else becomes oblivious to them excepting their point of focus.
Such is the dedication of a street photographer. Any kind of photographer whether street or urban like David Berkowitz Chicago have to be completely soaked in this passion for photography, otherwise their photographs will fail to have any kind of novelty in it.
Street photography is only type of photography which is rarely sponsored. The juxtaposition and unusual thing is what has to be captured by any street photographer. The identification of a good and expert street photographer is not the subject of their click but the reason of their click.
