Inverter AC does not mean that the appliance runs on inverter or works even during power outages. Inverter AC means ‘Inverter Technology’ is used to regulate compressor speed. Some of the famous brands providing Inverter AC technology are Voltas and Samsung.
What is inverter technology?
Compressors of regular air conditioners switch ‘ON’ and ‘OFF’, whereas in inverter technology the compressor remains ‘ON’ always.
When compressor in regular AC is started it runs at high speed for cooling the room to desired temperature. As soon as the desired temperature gets reached, the compressor motor stops. It re-starts, when room temperature increases. Thus, the cycle of ‘on’ and ‘off’ persists continuously.
Samsung uses inverter technology, where the compressor starts as you switch on the air condition. It operates at high speed to reach desired cooling temperature. After reaching this level, the motor does not stop but its speed slows down. This helps to maintain desired temperature constantly.
In inverter technology air conditioning system, peak level electricity gets consumed only when compressor works on high speed, when switched on. On the other hand, non-inverter air conditioners have compressors, which switch on and off, thus consuming significant electricity.
How 5-star rated air conditioners differ from inverter technology AC?
Bureau of Energy Efficiency in India is a Government body, which is responsible to issue energy ratings ranging from 1-star to 5-star for home appliance.
BEE rating depends on the appliances cooling capacity and energy efficiency. Calculations are based on the annual energy amount consumed in proportionate to its cooling capacity volume per unit. In respect to power consumption, 5-star AC is better than 4-star rated product. In the same way, 4-star is better than 3-star.
BEE updates star ratings, every year. Therefore the 5-star rating of the AC in 2016 will get 3-star in 2017. Updates ensure high energy efficiency standards because of developing technology each year. Check current BEE ratings, before you purchase an air conditioner on the basis of star rates.
Difference between inverter technology AC and 5-star AC
The 5-star AC is optimized stringently for energy efficiency by the BEE. However, BEE is not giving any star ratings to inverter AC because of its variable speed compressor feature. They are on lookout for new methods to rate the inverter AC.
Still, there is the Samsung inverter technology air conditioning system, which is recommended for purchase rather than the 5-star AC. Why?
In general, power consumption relies on compressor, efficiency of cooling liquid, energy loss during heat exchange, and the materials used. On this basis, the inverter technology AC triumphs over 5-star appliance. This does not mean that inverter AC uses less electricity in comparison to 5-star ACs. What if inverter AC made use of non-efficient cooling liquid? For this, the inverter AC would not be able to obtain any star ratings from BEE.
It is reported that from January 2018, new ISEER [Indian Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio] will be provided to inverter ACs. Make sure to check this out on compareraja.in.
Inverter AC prices are 20% more than the 5-star rated ACs. With ISEER rating in practice, today you can know how much energy the appliance will consume.
